There has been plenty of news on the food and drink front in Tunbridge Wells. KentLive has been busy exclusively reporting on the latest restaurants, takeaways and other food-lovers’ delights to come to town.

Some have already opened, with others confirming opening days or months, and another believed to be opening but unable yet to give an opening day or month. There should be something to keep all tastes happy, from gourmet burgers and German kebabs, to modern British and authentic Indian cuisine, and casual Asian dining.

The new businesses will add to the already generous mix of places to eat in Tunbridge Wells, serving excellent English pub grub, gastropub, fine dining and seafood, to our rich variety of international kitchens serving Bengali, Italian, Turkish, Greek, Thai, Japanese , Portuguese and other cuisines.

German Doner Kebab

German Doner Kebab opened in Tunbridge Wells and its distinctive black and orange branding burst on to our streets last month. German Doner Kebab, owned by Hero Brands Group, has ambitious expansion plans and aims to open 78 restaurants in the UK this year. Kent Live reporter Mary Harris went down to try a German doner kebab for the first time.

Ruby’s of Tunbridge Wells

Kent Live brought you the exciting exclusive news of the opening date of Ruby’s of Tunbridge Wells in Monson Road, opposite the new The Amelia Scott centre. The artisan vegan patisserie and cafe will be serving and selling everything from pick ‘n mix boxes, to seasonal stews and wedding cakes.

Allkin Brewing

In mid-April, Kent Live reported on a “craft beer and natural wine tap bar” which also serves food is poised to open in Tunbridge Wells. The bar in Calverley Road aims to be a relaxed environment serving “high quality produce” from craft beer and natural wines to its food.

The food will be served will be in partnership with The Small Holding in Cranbrook, with well-known chef Will Devlin devising the recipes, leading the rotating and seasonal dishes, and “handling the kitchen from start to finish”.

Roddy’s Burger

In March we broke the news Roddy Burger is opening up soon in the town center. Roddyburger is a name already known across Tunbridge Wells and in Tonbridge for its mouth-watering food, because it has catered at many events such as Castlemas in Tonbridge and the Tunbridge Wells Food Festival. Keep an eye on the doors as it’s due to open very soon.

And there was a flurry of news about gourmet burger restaurants opening in Tunbridge Wells. As we reporter a few weeks ago, Chuck and Blade is due to open next month and promises “juiciest, filthiest handmade burgers.”

Riwaz

But it is not just burger restaurants clamoring to open in foodie magnet Tunbridge Wells. Twice Michelin-star pioneering chef from India, Atul Kochhar will open his restaurant Riwaz on The Pantiles later this year. He told Kent Live, he “can’t wait” and “loves Tunbridge Wells”.

Riwaz, which is the brand opening in Tunbridge Wells, means ‘tradition’. It will serve “sensational Indian cuisine inspired by the history, cultural practices and rustic charm of the states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, West Bengali, and Orissa among others.

Five Guys

Back on the burger theme, and Five Guys announced it would be opening in the early summer in Tunbridge Wells. The American diner-style restaurant was founded in Virginia in 1986 and launched in the UK in 2013 in London’s Covent Garden. It boasts “250,000 possible burger combinations” and “1,0000 possible ways to customize your very own milkshake”.

Kumquat Cafe

There have been other openings including Kumquat Cafe on The Pantiles which serves “Asian flavors meet European cooking” at brunch, lunch and in the evening.

Social Mouth

Although Bocca Social bar and restaurant has not confirmed its opening date on Mount Pleasant, it has told KentLive work was underway and when they are opening their doors should be signed up soon.

Pepe’s Piri Piri

Pepe’s Piri Piri will be opening its first restaurant and takeaway in Kent. The chain describes itself as the “home of fresh flame-grilled chicken.” It has chosen Tunbridge Wells as its first town in Kent to open. Work was already underway on March 28 at the former hair salon on Camden Road in Tunbridge Wells, which is close to the town centre.

Pizza Tops

And earlier this month we were reported ops Pizza has applied to open at pizza and hot food take-away. Tops Pizza has more than 50 stores around the south west and said it is becoming one of the fastest growing pizza chain stores in the UK.

Its meals include the Downing Street Party Deal, the Two of Us and a buy one, get one free on a Tuesday along with The Hungry Man deal, which of course you don’t have to be a man to enjoy. There are also vegan options.
